2/3 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
¼ c. molasses
1 egg
½ tsp. salt
2 tsp. soda
2 c. flour
½ tsp. cloves
½ tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon

Grease baking sheet. Melt shortening over low heat and cool. Add sugar, molasses, and egg; beat well. Add dry ingredients. Chill. Form in 1 inch balls. Roll in granulated sugar. (Note: this is optional. If you don’t want the added sugar, it’s okay to not roll in granulated sugar. I have fixed it both ways.) Bake in moderate oven, about 325 degrees for about 10-12 minutes. Since all ovens are different, the time is approximate. Makes about 4 dozen.
